FreshAWL®O-S-R™ (Oil Spill Remedy) is an earth conscious, cost effective waste treatment solution that prevents oil from clumping and/or clinging to marine life, equipment and shorelines.

O-S-R safely* separates the oil particles from the water surface and deconstructs the oil molecules so that they can easy flow into the water column and become excellent food for hungry plankton.

Chemicals commonly used for treating an oil spill for open waters and riparian areas—such as detergents and dispersants—break apart the surface oil into smaller particles or droplets so that the oil no longer remains in a layer on the water's surface.

Other emulsifiers and dispersants actually cause the oils to blend in with water creating a "disappearing" effect and can also cause clumping. Most dispersants themselves harm marine life and the oil they disperse can remain in the body of water, sink to the sea floor or wash onto the wetlands poisoning marine life.

*The aquatic toxicity for FreshAWL O-S-R has been tested as virtually non-existent for plants, animals, and people. Rainbow trout still thrive and spawn. Additionally, O-S-R is safe enough to effectively clean oil off of oil soaked wildlife.

Oil Spill Clean Up

The O-S-R compound in figure A is shown to have similar geometry to the oil substances it comes in contact with—long chain molecules contained in O-S-R are soluble in water.

Figure B depicts O-S-R being sprayed on the oil/water surface and how O-S-R gets up close and personal to the oil and fat molecules where it dissolves in the oil layer and then associates with the fat and oil molecules to break them apart from each other.

In Figure C the oil molecules that are now associated with O-S-R are no longer associated with themselves and unable to be hydrophobic or attract other oil molecules. This is considered the softening phase where the fats oils and greases no longer behave like tar and start behaving like thin oil. This is because of the Eutectic Cloud Point Reducing effect which changes normally occurring solids at room temperature to liquids. This slimy and slightly gooey stage remains intact until a wave action (or lift station) in the water helps to further break them apart.

Open Water Oil Spill Dispersant In figure D the associated O-S-R and oil particles start coming off the slick and begin disassociating.

The best part is that these particles are no larger than the size of fine sand and no longer lighter than water but are heavier or equal to the specific gravity of water. This means that any wave action or agitation causes the particles to leave the slick and associate with the water or the sludge in the case of a wastewater treatment plant.

Figure E shows the continuation of this process that eventually reduces the floating material to near zero. Alternative enzymatic processes only work within the water and in the reverse direction by eating floating grease from the bottom. Enzymes must be wet and cannot associate with the upper surfaces of the floating grease and will not prevent the hydrophobic colloidal bonding that keeps the fatty chunks together.
