Mosquito control (Vector control) with FreshAWL WOW-Air B

FreshAWL® WOW-Air B™ has as one of its key benefits a component that is specifically designed to disrupt the assemblage of cellular proteins thereby acting as a vector control agent and insect growth reducer of adult mosquitoes and larvae. In addition to being a powerful larviciding application, WOW-Air B is extremely effective at adulticiding full grown mosquitos. Mosquito control (Vector control) is a program designed to help manage the population of mosquitoes towards the goal of reducing their damage to human health, local economies, and overall quality of life.

Mosquito control is a vital public-health practice throughout the world and especially in the tropics where mosquito borne diseases, such as malaria are prevalent. Mosquito-control operations are targeted against three different problems:

  1. Nuisance mosquitoes that bother people at homes, in parks and around recreational areas;
  2. Economically, the presence of mosquitoes may reduce real estate values, adversely affect tourism and related business interests, or negatively impact livestock or poultry production; and
  3. Public health is the focus when mosquitoes are vectors, or transmitters, of infectious disease.

Disease organisms transmitted by mosquitoes may include:

  • West Nile virus, Saint Louis encephalitis virus, Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus, Everglades virus, Highlands J virus and La Crosse Encephalitis virus in the United States;
  • Dengue fever, yellow fever, Ilheus virus, malaria and filariasis in the American tropics;
  • Rift Valley fever, Wuchereria bancrofti, Japanese Encephalitis, chikungunya, malaria and filariasis in Africa and Asia; and
  • Murray Valley encephalitis in Australia.

Depending on the situation, source reduction, biocontrol, larviciding (control of larvae) or adulticiding (control of adults) may be used to manage mosquito populations. These techniques are accomplished using habitat modification, pesticides, biological-control agents and trapping.

The following video is provided to reproduce the results of a 30-minute test performed on June 16th, 2011 at 1:00 PM showing the killing effects of WOW-Air B on adult and larval stage mosquitoes.
