Wastewater Treatment
Why should a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) switch to or use FreshAWL solutions?

The FreshAWL® family of WWTP Solutions:  WOW-AIR™, WOW-AIR B™, WOW-Air B28™, WOW-AIR S™, Z-FOG™ and Z-AMP™ have an incredible capacity for specifically scavenging H2S and mercaptans, both aerobically and anaerobically without being hindered by various organics. With the ability to react specifically with H2S malodors, the addition rates of FreshAWL solutions can be a fraction of other odor control chemicals. Chlorine, Bleach, Bioxide, Ferrous and Ferric Chlorides, Magnesium Oxide, and Hydrogen Peroxide all react with everything. Therefore, their insertion rates must be inflated to overcome these organics in order to remove H2S.

For example, insertion rates for Ferric Chloride can be 50-200 times greater than WOW-AIR.  Additionally, WOW-AIR solutions can eliminate H2S down to an undetectable 0 ppm level (or 100% reduction). Other less effective chemicals advertise 50-75% odor removal, not elimination. 

Additional benefits of the WOW-Air solutions are their buffering of pH, sludge reduction, increasing digester return flows to the head-works, significantly improved sludge dewatering, corrosion inhibition and prevention, and a much smaller footprint for storage and ease of handling and just as important, worker and environmental safety.

Each WWTP operates to meet a set of parameters determined by the EPA or Regional Water Board (in CA) and requirements contained in their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Chemicals such as Chlorine, Bleach, Bioxide, Ferrous and Ferric Chlorides, Magnesium Oxide, and Hydrogen Peroxide normally have a set of issues that plant operators tolerate because of their treatment needs. When considering chemicals for use at a WWTP, managers and operators must qualify the chemicals under standards set by the EPA, CWA and the NPDES. FreshAWL solutions for WWTPs are safer than alternative chemicals and there are no adverse downstream effects. In fact, the residual of WOW-AIR solutions is water, CO2and trace methane.

The WOW-AIR solutions contain an activated molecule base designed specifically for wastewater treatment processes and does not rely on or use any metal, mineral or other substances that will cause an increase in Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, corrosion or sludge. The WOW-AIR products help to reduce TDS and sludge, buffer pH, and in addition, eliminate H2S and mercaptans while inhibiting corrosion. Additionally, the WOW-Air solutions do not use enzymes, bacteria or surfactants.

How does the WOW-AIR product compare with the other chemical agents being used?

FreshAWL solutions have shown under test conditions that they inhibit corrosion. This means that rather than having to resort to caustic oxidizing agents that corrode equipment, WWTP operators can choose a safe and more powerful alternative that will extend, rather than shorten the life of their structures and equipment.

Problem areas are not limited to the plant processes but also are in the collection and transport systems. If WOW-Air is inserted in a lift station or pumping station, what benefits are accrued to the system? 

FreshAWL solutions, specifically WOW-Air and Z-FOG in lift-stations and transport lines will prevent continued odor, FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease) caking and corrosion from the H2S and FOGs that are ever present under existing treatment and transport conditions.

How does WOW-Air make the system better?  This means that rather than using multiple man-hours and equipment to vacuum, hydro-jet, scrub and at times bore out lines and stations, WOW-AIR solutions will act as  preventative maintenance measures along with providing immediate resolution of local odor issues and FOG build up. These solutions will allow field-techs and operators to maintain efficient lift-stations and lines with minimal effort while reducing community complaints.

How are FreshAWL products safer to handle than other chemicals?

FreshAWL solutions for WWTPs are an optimal choice where safety is of concern. They are GRAS certified and are not regulated by OSHA or DOT as hazardous materials. Plant personnel require no specialized certification or handling training. FreshAWL solutions are non-toxic and non-corrosive. The products have a shelf life of at least 2 years and will not degrade in sunlight or outdoor storage conditions.

What is the safety benefit of using FreshAWL solutions? The storage footprint for these solutions is 10% - 30% of the footprints of competitive chemical choices which translates to less frequent shipments. And, they do not require specialized delivery equipment/systems or structures.

Some WWTPs suffer from internal pipe build-up of Struvite which can literally cause system breakages. Is there a FreshAWL solution for this costly problem? A common challenge for WWTPs is struvite which is a hard compound composed of Ammonium, Magnesium and Phosphate (AMP). AMP is a phosphate mineral with the formula:

NH4MgPO4·6H2O that can become a major problem. When the conditions are right, the Struvite will rapidly form crystals that spread throughout a pipeline forming a concrete-like crust. It is most commonly a problem in dewatering filtrate or lagoon decant streams and in spots with local turbulence, such as pipe elbows, mixer blades and pumps.

The solution for the continued system functionality of a WWTP where struvite is a concern is FreshAWL Z-AMP.  Specifically designed to dissolve struvite, Z-AMP also prevents Ammonium, Magnesium and Phosphate to bond and form struvite. Once the struvite has been chelated by Z-AMP, the minerals can never again bond to form struvite.

In addition, Z-AMP is highly affective with other precipitates such as Vivianite and Calcium carbonate.

<span >Pulp & Paper Mills

How can Pulp and paper Mills handle the problems they face for the elimination of H2S, TRS, VOCs, and Methyl mercaptans?

Domestic and International manufacturers of pulp and paper require scheduled maintenance shutdowns and are faced with the need for an effective solution to neutralize H2S (Hydrogen sulfide) and Methyl mercaptans that are contained in their closed Noncondensible Gas (NCG) systems. NCG Gas Systems are installed to collect gases from several emission sources and provide for their disposal by incineration or chemical modification.

Before breaking any of the pipe flanges for the maintenance cleaning, the systems contain approximately 5,000 gallons of contaminated water, which requires neutralization. Contaminant levels of H2S reach 16.0 ppm aqueous or 650 - 800 ppm gaseous and PID/VOCs levels of 450.

These are levels that can kill a person along with sending a noxious odor cloud throughout the surrounding communities.

110 gallons of FreshAWL Mill-Fresh™ was used to treat their wastewater. The solution contact time was from one-three hours depending on system locale. Once the system was breached the solution was measured for H2S, Methyl mercaptans, SO4, VOCs, and NCGs which were all eliminated to readings of ZERO.

<span >Hydrocarbon Processing

What FreshAWL solutions are available to treat waste associated with hydrocarbon processing such as sulfur, mercaptans and H2S removal from fuel oils?

Firstly, from a safety perspective contact with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in gas form is toxic, and at certain concentrations deadly. Secondly, the compound is so corrosive it can degrade and destroy installations and process equipment at an alarming rate. Thirdly, high levels of mercaptans and H2S reduces an end product’s value. Technologies to remove mercaptans have traditionally been limited and expensive, especially for the treatment of crude oil.

FreshAWL solutions have been developed to provide answers for the technology needed to meet the increasingly stringent low sulfur requirements in the U.S. and abroad. FreshAWL FUEL-WASH™ removes mercaptans, carbonyl sulfide (COS), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2) and naphthalenic acids without degrading fuel efficiencies.

FUEL-WASH will actually remove 90% or more of the mercaptans from fuel oils and separates out the elemental sulfur for reclamation.
